There is a certain plot twist where a player gets to choose which romantic interest to side with, one being good and the other - evil, but this is about as deep as it gets. After finishing the game once, I could barely recall the names of half of the characters. Unfortunately, not only is the story plain and uninteresting but so are the characters. The gist of the story in this game revolves around a prophecy about great power and a wizard apprentice Sareth, trying to collect an ancient artifact called 'The Skull of Shadows' from the city of Stonehelm that could turn a mortal into a Demigod or Demon, depending on the way you see it. Like Dishonored, Dark Messiah has lots of cool ideas, but unlike Dishonored, it strongly lacks polish and personality. Of course, both games share the same developer, so that's no coincidence.
It had Dishonored vibes before Dishonored was a thing. Some of it is more fleshed out in the loading screens, but I never had enough time to read what was on screen and really had no idea what was going on for the entirety of the game.ġ4h 9m PlayedThe Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, developed by Arkane Studios and Ubisoft, is a game that came out ahead of its time. The story is terrible and is basically just set dressing to be ignored. There are some light platforming segments and these moment can feel pretty unpolished. Although the combat is the main focus of the experience, the enemy variety is quite shallow. That being said, there are quite a few flaws in Dark Messiah. There is a lot of replay ability on offer here. As you progress through your objectives you are rewarded with skill points to allocate towards different skill trees. The environments are highly reactive and you can get really creative with how you interact with your foes. A lot of the focus on RPG elements have been stripped down in favor of physics based combat that is janky in the most endearing and visceral sense of the word. 13h 42m PlayedJust as how Arx Fatalis was really an Ultima Underworld game with a new name, Dark Messiah is Arx Fatalis 2–the Might and Magic branding was slapped on because Arx Fatalis sold poorly.
